Harrods history; Charles Henry Harrod an East End wholesale grocer moved to Knightsbridge in 1834 from Stepney. By 1883 the business was employing over 100 staff under the control of Harrods' son Charles Digby. Was owned by Mohamed Alfayed since 1985. Over the following 20 years, Mohamed invested more than £400 million in creating a Harrods that matched his personal vision. He often said that he wanted to make his “fantasy” a reality. The customers who today flock to Harrods, in numbers totaling more than 200,000 on some days, are a testimony to his success in achieving those ambitions.

Sold to the Qatar Royal Family - 7 May 2010 Mohamed al Fayed sold Harrods, Britain's most famous corner shop, to the Qatari royal family for £1.5 billion. In English-language broadcast media within Qatar - for example, television commercials for Qatar Airways and advertisements concerning economic development in Qatar—the name is pronounced "KA-tar", with a distinct differentiation between the syllables from the forming of the 't' sound.
