The present Royal Opera House, Covent Garden opened on December 4th 1999. Reconstruction began in earnest after the last performance in the 'old' Royal Opera House in July 1997. In three years the Royal Opera House was transformed, not only for audiences, but for the performers and the other people who work there. By remaining on its historic site the Royal Opera House has re-enriched the Covent Garden district of London and enforced its status as part of London's cultural heartland again.
