The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain, Hyde Park, London, W2
Opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 6th July 2004, the controversial Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain is tucked away in a quiet corner of Hyde Park just off the Rotten Row (??) The other side of The Ring from The Serpentine Gallery.
Using computer technology (from the motor industry) the The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain was designed and built using only the "finest materials and talent" The 545 pieces of Cornish granite form an egg shaped structure, where water flows from the highest point, down each chute, cascading and swirling as it goes, creating bubbles and sound before entering a calm, slow moving pool at the lowest point (in her life?).
The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain is supposed to symbolise Diana's quality of openness. There are three stone bridges that you may cross to get to the heart of the fountain.
The water in the The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain only flows through the fountain once - being drawn from the London water table.
A fitting tribute to Diana, the Queen of Hearts? We can all form our own opinions on that, after we have visited the memorial. The Royal Parks management should be ashamed of the cheap (and nasty!) metres high chain link fence that surrounds the The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain - There was none of "the finest materials, talent or technology" employed in creating that!
